Goals Update - September 2020

I cannot believe how different life is now compared to August. These kinds of posts really show me where my mind is at and how I’m coping with changes. I try to schedule a goals update every six weeks, and it’s a nice time to sit back and reflect on the things I’ve been working on.

Now, I’m getting ready to restart my career. I’m working a lot which is making it harder to get things done during the week. I worked seven days in a row last week and ended up taking the weekend off of responsibilities by complete accident (hence no blog post).

Really, I found it difficult to keep track of all of my habits. I ended up downloading an app called Done to see if that can help me out. It tells me how many days in a row I’ve been working on things, so I think this will be great for me!

For now, here’s what I’ve been working on.

1.      Journaling

I thought this was going to be the month that I started making a “success” list. Unfortunately, due to my exhaustion of keeping up with work last week, I did not complete a few days of journaling. I think this needs to go hand in hand with my bedtime routine. I did it before because I wasn’t on a time limit, and I wasn’t working. I need to give myself more time to do this crucial activity.

2.      Meditation

I am definitely a better person when I’ve meditated in the day. What I realized is that while I was technically doing it every day, it wasn’t a consistent routine. I just told myself, “I’ll just do a Sleepcast and that counts.” Well, it doesn’t count. Not for the reason I want to meditate. Now, I do it after I get dressed and ready for the day and before I get started on whatever it is I have to do. Whether it’s part of a meditation course or a short breathing exercise, it all counts.

3.      Bedtime

I am happy to say this is one I’ve actually been alright at. My real problem is that I’ve had issues tracking it. Sometimes, I worked weekends and needed to go to bed at a decent time. Other times, it has been family movie night so I’ve stayed up later. As a third option, I had nothing to do in the evening or morning and stayed up just because I could. I need to be more consistent. I’ve decided that if there ISN’T anything going on in the evenings, I’ll stick to my bedtime no matter what.

Next step: Movement

Ski season is (hopefully) right around the corner. I need to get myself moving to strengthen up for that. I’ll be working on that with my dad and sister to see if they can keep me accountable.

Overall, I think I have done alright here. It’s not perfect. In the past, I’ve really felt like a failure if I haven’t been able to keep up with the goals I set for myself. I think the pandemic has made me realize that it’s not worth stressing over. I can always just start again!

What have you been working on recently?

Is fall not the best reading season? I’m so glad I’ve had a few opportunities to sit on the front porch, wrapped in a fuzzy blanket with a hot drink and my book. Right now, it’s raining outside and all I want to do is cozy up and get back to my book. I’ve read some great non-fiction in the past six weeks. I’m learning so much about how people relate to the world around them. That is so important to me. Check them out! The Reason I Jump: The Inner Voice of a Thirteen-Year-Old Boy with Autism – Naoki Higashida – 4 Stars         This is a very short book that I think everyone should read – particularly those who work with children. Although knowledge has come a long way, there is still so much more to be learned about autism. This book is a series of question that Naoki Higashida answers from his point of view. Interspersed is also a handful of short stories from Higashida’s point of view.         It’s an incredible book. It’s something that really allows readers to understand ho

Monthly Favourites- February 2016

I don’t know about you, but it feels like February has flown by! I can’t say it’s been a busy month; it’s more like a month of sinking back into routine. Last month, I was so ready to get back to school. It’s been great so far. I’m loving my classes, and I’m doing well with keeping on top of readings. I went to watch The Superbowl with friends (we didn’t make it to halftime), took control of my own body, and I’ve made myself a solid group of friends. I’m really happy. Here’s what got me through the month: 1.        NetGalley     I’m sure you can tell based on the sheer amount of book reviews I’ve been posting, but I have been reading quite a lot. This is all thanks to NetGalley. I have been a member of the site for over a year, but I never really got into it until now. At home, I have an extensive bookshelf, but I couldn’t bring that to the UK with me. I turned to NetGalley, and I have been rewarded. As a member, I request book titles and get a free e-book. In exchange, I have
