Goals Update - April 2020

Welcome back friends! How are we all doing? I’m not going to lie – I’m not doing very well at all. As it turns out, I’m someone who really needs structure and something to look forward to. Right now, I have none of that. I have no idea when I’ll be returning to work, I have no idea if or when I’ll be able to go home, and I have no idea when this will all be over. I genuinely thought I was fine but then I started getting rashes every day,  my skin started breaking out, and my acid reflux came back. All of these are signs of anxiousness for me. The worst part is, there is absolutely nothing that can be said or done to make me feel better. I just need to keep doing what I’m doing, pay even more attention to myself, and keep my fingers crossed.

So. What is keeping me going? Believe it or not, it’s routine. I mentioned in my last monthly favourites that keeping lists is something that helped in the first week of lockdown. I’ve put everything that I want to do on my list that I wanted to accomplish outside of all of this. At the time of publishing this, it has been almost two weeks of lockdown, and I’ve done literally everything on my list. That means, I’ve been accomplishing all of my goals!

In my last goals update post, I mentioned that I’d been working on journaling and going to bed early. I haven’t been perfect at journaling, but I do it more than not. As for getting to bed early, that was becoming a good routine as well. I also wasn’t perfect at it, but I was going to bed earlier than I used to. I made some fantastic positive shifts, and I will continue to use this time off as a way to embed even healthier routines in my life.

Like I said, I’m doing well right now, so it was difficult to think about the next goal I want to accomplish. I decided that drinking water is one of the best things I can do for my health right now. It might help clear up some of the skin issues I’ve been having as a result of my stress and it will get rid of extra toxins. It’s a good way to exercise some self care (as I sit here with a face mask drying). I’ve re-downloaded an old favourite app to remind me to drink water, and I’ve armed myself with some cute water bottles. Wish me luck!

I wanted to keep things positive during this time, but I need to maintain the truth in “Real, Not Ideal.” If you want to chat about the ways you’re trying to embed some routines or even about this mess we’re living in now, comment below!

Is fall not the best reading season? I’m so glad I’ve had a few opportunities to sit on the front porch, wrapped in a fuzzy blanket with a hot drink and my book. Right now, it’s raining outside and all I want to do is cozy up and get back to my book. I’ve read some great non-fiction in the past six weeks. I’m learning so much about how people relate to the world around them. That is so important to me. Check them out! The Reason I Jump: The Inner Voice of a Thirteen-Year-Old Boy with Autism – Naoki Higashida – 4 Stars         This is a very short book that I think everyone should read – particularly those who work with children. Although knowledge has come a long way, there is still so much more to be learned about autism. This book is a series of question that Naoki Higashida answers from his point of view. Interspersed is also a handful of short stories from Higashida’s point of view.         It’s an incredible book. It’s something that really allows readers to understand ho
