A conversation you hear a lot is about surrounding yourself with people that will make you better. “You’re a mix of the five people you’re closest to” and “be the least intelligent in the room” are aims we’re told to live by.
I have an amazing support system. My parents are incredible,
my sister is my favourite person, Matt is my perfect balance, and my closest
friends have stuck with me despite moving many times. However, some of the
people that have made the biggest difference in my life are ones that I call my
cheerleaders.
These are the people who don’t play a massive role in your
life. They’re on the outside of your inner circle, but you know they’re in your
corner no matter what.
Let me go through some examples.
I’ve been going to my hairdresser for a long time now. She
has seen me through some massive stages of my life. She knew me before Matt, she
has met friends that are no longer in my life, and she has shared in my joy
over starting my career. She knows me so well and knows what will make me
smile.
My massage therapist came recommended from a friend. The
first time I went to her, I was about to go for an MRI for my knee. The next
time I saw her, I was healing from surgery, got a permanent job, had news that
Matt was coming, and I was feeling hope for the first time all year. In that second
conversation, she told me she was so proud of me even though we had only met
twice. She brings so much light to my life and reminds me to be gentle with
myself.
I have a multitude of friends on Instagram from past lives
that I talk to intermittently. Some of them are people I knew from school or
from mutual friends (one is my best friend’s brother’s wife whom I have never
met), but they’re people that I have semi-regular conversations with. We’ve mutually
watched each other achieve goals and grow so much. We check in with each other
and give support when needed. They’re people that bring reminders of how far I’ve
come. They’re people that lift me up.
Yes, the people immediately around you are important. But sometimes,
your cheerleaders may be the ones you didn’t know you needed in the moment.
