July in Pictures

I am trying something new today. I always love creating and posting my monthly favourites list at the end of the month (see June's favourites here). It shows you a little bit of my life, but I want to tell you all about the more mundane things. What have I really done this month?

This is a new type of post at the end of the month where I show you some pictures from my phone and tell you a little bit about what I’ve been up to.

Let’s get personal!

If you didn’t know (maybe because you’ve read a lot about my time in Cardiff), I am Canadian. July 1st marks Canada Day. I had a nice meal with my parents and watched fireworks in a neighbourhood park. My family is completely obsessed with fireworks. This year’s display was the best yet (although we say that every year).

I didn’t grow up with family nearby. My mom’s sisters live on the east coast, so we never got to see them growing up. This year, my Auntie Judi planned a visit to come see me. While she was here, my sister had a day off from working at her summer camp, so we went to see her as well! This is when we saw a little bit of Orillia. These reunions are so rare, so they are just extra special to me.

I haven’t taken a ton of pictures with my friends because I constantly forget. This picture is from a dinner with some family friends. The beginning of the month was all about seeing my friends before surgery. It feels so nice to be at home with the people who truly love me.

I could not resist putting this picture in the mix. This is the best pizza in the entire world. It is from a place in Toronto called Camarra's. My dad and I went to Toronto because I had a VISA appointment, and we also saw my Nonna. She treated us to pizza, and it was a great visit. Nonna also told me how proud she is that I’m a teacher now. This little day trip was special for so many reasons.

This is part of what I (hilariously) dubbed my last meal. The night before my surgery, my parents took me out to my favourite restaurant. My mom also made some delicious tiramisu for dessert. I had been requesting this for so long, and it was a great treat.

A few days ago, my sister came home. She makes me feel like I’m whole. She’s my best friend in the entire world. The reason I didn’t post this yesterday is because I had to say goodbye to her. I was a little heartbroken. She’s back at camp, and we won’t be seeing each other for another five months. This picture is from Orillia, but I couldn’t share bits of my life without mentioning this.

This is what my diet consists of currently. Recovery-wise, I’m doing really well. I’m still on soft food though. Jell-O and pudding are my life.

That’s everything I’ve done this month. Did you like the new type of blog post? Did you hate it? Leave me a comment and let me know!

What have you been up to lately?

Is fall not the best reading season? I’m so glad I’ve had a few opportunities to sit on the front porch, wrapped in a fuzzy blanket with a hot drink and my book. Right now, it’s raining outside and all I want to do is cozy up and get back to my book. I’ve read some great non-fiction in the past six weeks. I’m learning so much about how people relate to the world around them. That is so important to me. Check them out! The Reason I Jump: The Inner Voice of a Thirteen-Year-Old Boy with Autism – Naoki Higashida – 4 Stars         This is a very short book that I think everyone should read – particularly those who work with children. Although knowledge has come a long way, there is still so much more to be learned about autism. This book is a series of question that Naoki Higashida answers from his point of view. Interspersed is also a handful of short stories from Higashida’s point of view.         It’s an incredible book. It’s something that really allows readers to understand ho
