Monthly Favourites - November 2018

I cannot believe it is the end of November. This means it is one month closer to seeing my family and one more month that I have survived my first year of teaching! Things have been wild recently (as I’m sure you can tell by the severe lack of posts), so I have to catch you up as much as possible!

1.       Austria Trip

I am working on making a wonderful travel post for you all about this trip. My two best friends from home came to see me at the beginning of the month since I had a week off, and I cannot begin to tell you how thankful I am for this trip. We go to see so many places and experience different cultures. For me, the most important part was just being with them. I’ve been craving friend time, and it means so much to me that they wanted to come see me. We now have some incredible memories to cherish.

2.       The Military Band at the Changing of the Guard

Before we left for Austria, we had a couple days in London. I think the Changing of the Guard is one of those things that could be overrated. However, the band is AMAZING. I was a bank geek (and proud of it) in high school, and I’m a huge fan of music. The band played Skyfall AND Thriller and it was fantastic. I fangirled the whole time.

3.       Rewards System

This is so silly, but I have come up with a great way to motivate myself to mark books. It is, in fact, in the form of Smarties. It was a complete accident one day, but I have been using it ever since. When I know I can eat one Smartie after every book marked, it definitely speeds up the process. My book-marking time has been cut in half. Whatever works, right?

4.       Christmas Candles

It is that time of year again! I just got myself this adorable candle folder with four scents from a Black Friday deal, and I am obsessed. I happened to walk by a candle store that is going out of business, so I may be making even more purchases to make my flat smell very Christmas-y!

5.       Eco-Friendly Make-Up Wipes

In an effort to be more eco-conscious, I wanted to find a way to take my make-up off and put toner on without going through 100s of makeup wipes and cotton pads a year. I found these wipes on Amazon, and I have been loving them. They are soft and thick and a great size for using to take makeup off your entire face. I love that they come in a laundry bag so they don’t get lost in the wash. I bought two sets, so one is for storage and one is for washing. Definitely a good invest in the long run!

I have so much to look forward to in December. The Christmas season is certainly my favourite, and it is going to be even more magical to get to go home.

That’s all I have for now. What have been your favourite things this month?

Recently Read - October 2020

Is fall not the best reading season? I’m so glad I’ve had a few opportunities to sit on the front porch, wrapped in a fuzzy blanket with a hot drink and my book. Right now, it’s raining outside and all I want to do is cozy up and get back to my book. I’ve read some great non-fiction in the past six weeks. I’m learning so much about how people relate to the world around them. That is so important to me. Check them out! The Reason I Jump: The Inner Voice of a Thirteen-Year-Old Boy with Autism – Naoki Higashida – 4 Stars         This is a very short book that I think everyone should read – particularly those who work with children. Although knowledge has come a long way, there is still so much more to be learned about autism. This book is a series of question that Naoki Higashida answers from his point of view. Interspersed is also a handful of short stories from Higashida’s point of view.         It’s an i...

Book Review- A Treatise On Shelling Beans by Wieslaw Mysliwski

So this book took me way too long to read. I read before bed to shut my brain off, but I was so exhausted all summer that I was asleep as soon as I got into bed. It has been a long time, but I finally finished it! I took a good handful of quotes that sparked my thinking, so brace yourself! And if you’re interested in the tradition summer, you can find it here . 1.        When people can be divided by something they always will be (9). Just think-the only thing that really divides us as people are differences. If we see someone who is a fraction of a fraction different than us, our minds consider it division. Why is that? Why must we let things get in the way of relationships?   2.        All the more because if you ask me, these days the soul is a commodity like anything else. You can buy it and sell it, and the prices aren’t high (28) A popular book genre of the modern era is “self-help.” Lumped with that...
