Monthly Favourites - August 2019

Looking back on this month and trying to narrow it down to only five items was difficult! I happened to be incredibly busy. It was a great month for seeing new things and doing a lot of road trips.
These are the things that stood out to me the most:

1.      Trius Winery Tour

I’m still obsessed with the pictures from this winery tour. This place is known for their sparkling wine and whoever decorated clearly knew what they were doing because everywhere you looked was highly Instagram-able.

Each of their wines was delicious and all the pink was adorable! If you’re in the Niagara area, definitely go check this place out!

2.      Local Tourism

This is one of the moments where I had to generalize some activities. I had a friend from England visit and because she was here, I got to do a lot of things I never thought of.

We did Toronto for a day and then went to the Butterfly Conservatory the next day. It was nice to be a tourist around the area I live in.

3.      Cowbell Craft Brewery

This was an amazing tour that my parents took me on. I cannot stress enough how cool this brewery is. The tour guide was very passionate about her work and made it clear that the owners are also passionate about creating a fantastic place to work.

This place makes an effort to be eco-friendly, commits to social responsibility by giving proceeds to children’s hospitals, and places an emphasis on community as well. I felt good being there.

Also, the food is to die for and as a huge bonus, it’s completely free of peanuts and nuts!

4.      Being Home

Out of everything, this is the thing that stands out to me the most. I mentioned in my last post how nice it was to be home. It’s about the people, the food, and the pool. I feel so at peace at home.

5.      Stratford

Just yesterday, I got back from a trip to Stratford with some co-workers. From the karaoke in the car, to the glorious bathtub, to the hyperventilating about the hallowed ground Shakespeare once trod, it was marvellous. I will post a more in-depth post later, but my heart is so full after this trip. I think it was a great way to end the summer!

That’s all for August. I don’t have any plans for September except for starting work and hoping to keep it together. My hours go up now since I’m not a first-year teacher anymore, so I am hoping to keep a semblance of a work/life balance. Wish me luck!

How was your August? Are you one of the lucky ones who had the summer off? If so, what are you most looking forward to in the new school year?

Recently Read - October 2020

Is fall not the best reading season? I’m so glad I’ve had a few opportunities to sit on the front porch, wrapped in a fuzzy blanket with a hot drink and my book. Right now, it’s raining outside and all I want to do is cozy up and get back to my book. I’ve read some great non-fiction in the past six weeks. I’m learning so much about how people relate to the world around them. That is so important to me. Check them out! The Reason I Jump: The Inner Voice of a Thirteen-Year-Old Boy with Autism – Naoki Higashida – 4 Stars         This is a very short book that I think everyone should read – particularly those who work with children. Although knowledge has come a long way, there is still so much more to be learned about autism. This book is a series of question that Naoki Higashida answers from his point of view. Interspersed is also a handful of short stories from Higashida’s point of view.         It’s an i...

Book Review- A Treatise On Shelling Beans by Wieslaw Mysliwski

So this book took me way too long to read. I read before bed to shut my brain off, but I was so exhausted all summer that I was asleep as soon as I got into bed. It has been a long time, but I finally finished it! I took a good handful of quotes that sparked my thinking, so brace yourself! And if you’re interested in the tradition summer, you can find it here . 1.        When people can be divided by something they always will be (9). Just think-the only thing that really divides us as people are differences. If we see someone who is a fraction of a fraction different than us, our minds consider it division. Why is that? Why must we let things get in the way of relationships?   2.        All the more because if you ask me, these days the soul is a commodity like anything else. You can buy it and sell it, and the prices aren’t high (28) A popular book genre of the modern era is “self-help.” Lumped with that...
