Monthly Favourites - June 2020

When I was saving the document for this blog post, I smiled when I wrote the date. I’ve been home for nearly a month. Things have felt better than they have since March. I’ve started to sink into a routine (more on that later), and I get to see all the people I’ve been missing.

There were SO MANY good things about this month that I had a hard time narrowing it down. My sticky note where I keep my list has been scribbled over and re-written so many times. For that, I am grateful.

1.      Home

This is the over-arching favourite of the month. After I got my last suitcase a few days ago (it has been an absolute nightmare), I finally feel settled in. The first thing I did when I got home was shower and make tea as a homage to my now second home, but I certainly feel more comfortable here.

2.      Pool

To all my British friends reading this, I’m sorry I keep bringing this up, but I won’t stop doing it. We have been so lucky to have some HOT weather to enjoy. I also love how easy it is to social distance with the pool. I’ve been inviting friends over for a socially distanced swim since being outside doesn’t require masks. Seeing people has made my heart so full. I would also like to give a special shout out to Deanna (in this picture) because she has helped me face some of the realities of growing up and moving on. Love you forever.

3.      Haven’s Creamery

I mentioned this place back in August of 2017, and it remains one of my favourite places. We all know ice cream is my weakness. My sister and I discovered that they deliver, so we bought ice cream for a the family. I mentioned it in last week's post as well, so it’s clearly something that stood out. My dad also decided that bowls weren’t good enough for the remaining ice cream, so we, along with my sister, made pizzelle bowls for it!

4.      Hiking at the Pinery

I loved this trip. It was the first time I left my house after my quarantine, and it was a great way to spend some time with Brianne. We stopped by the water, had lunch at a lookout point, tried to attract some bears, and had a snack on a river. I loved this day so much.

5.      Brianne’s Birthday

Brianne turned 23 this year, and we had a couple great celebrations. On her actual birthday, I was still in quarantine, but we still wanted to find a way to have fun. So, we taught our dad how to play beer pong. This picture has to be one of my favourite pictures of all time. The three of us had so much fun – even if we felt a little rough the next day.

I’m still smiling as I’m finishing this off. I have LOVED this month. Although the first half of it was still in quarantine, I’ve really made the most of my time. I’m soaking up the sun, reading a lot, and spending so much time with my family. Oh, and I’m still working.

What have been your June highlights?

Recently Read - October 2020

Is fall not the best reading season? I’m so glad I’ve had a few opportunities to sit on the front porch, wrapped in a fuzzy blanket with a hot drink and my book. Right now, it’s raining outside and all I want to do is cozy up and get back to my book. I’ve read some great non-fiction in the past six weeks. I’m learning so much about how people relate to the world around them. That is so important to me. Check them out! The Reason I Jump: The Inner Voice of a Thirteen-Year-Old Boy with Autism – Naoki Higashida – 4 Stars         This is a very short book that I think everyone should read – particularly those who work with children. Although knowledge has come a long way, there is still so much more to be learned about autism. This book is a series of question that Naoki Higashida answers from his point of view. Interspersed is also a handful of short stories from Higashida’s point of view.         It’s an i...

Book Review- A Treatise On Shelling Beans by Wieslaw Mysliwski

So this book took me way too long to read. I read before bed to shut my brain off, but I was so exhausted all summer that I was asleep as soon as I got into bed. It has been a long time, but I finally finished it! I took a good handful of quotes that sparked my thinking, so brace yourself! And if you’re interested in the tradition summer, you can find it here . 1.        When people can be divided by something they always will be (9). Just think-the only thing that really divides us as people are differences. If we see someone who is a fraction of a fraction different than us, our minds consider it division. Why is that? Why must we let things get in the way of relationships?   2.        All the more because if you ask me, these days the soul is a commodity like anything else. You can buy it and sell it, and the prices aren’t high (28) A popular book genre of the modern era is “self-help.” Lumped with that...
