Monthly Favourites - October 2020

I had SUCH a hard time narrowing down my choices for this month. It has been a month jam packed with some very exciting things. I’ve started working an actual teaching job again which now has me working weekends, but I’ve also been filling my time with some amazing personal things. No more blabbing – here it is!

1.      Dance

This is something I’ve been doing for a couple months with my sister, but it isn’t until this month that I really started feeling good about it. I danced for years and then stopped seven years ago when I started university. Brianne never stopped, so she wanted to start it again when I got home. At first, it was really hard. My body wasn’t used to moving this way anymore. After the first few classes, I found myself in tears because I felt like I was doing horribly. Well, I’m happy to say I’m getting better and it’s getting easier. I truly look forward to going every week.

2.      Thanksgiving

It was Thanksgiving this month! Things were pretty up in the air because of Covid, and we ended up having an outdoor Thanksgiving with our family friends. This was a dream of ours, and we’re so glad we got to do it. WE brought blankets to cozy up at night, and it was certainly an interesting memory to have forever.

3.      Paint Night

Here’s another thing I’ve done this month that was intimidating at first. As part of a charity event, my mum’s work hosted a virtual paint night. Now, I have NO artistic skill, but I managed to paint this! It was really fun, and we loved getting to spend time together. I mean, we keep joking that mum put hers on its own because hers is significantly better than ours, but we’re glad for the keepsakes.

4.      Coconut Chips

Brianne and I found these at the Superstore initially and decided to try them for fun. They were expensive, but we really liked them. Then, we’ve been finding them for a cheaper price at Winners! They aren’t too chocolatey but they have an amazing crunch to them. They’re also safe for my allergy! We’re completely obsessed with this little snack.

5.      Joanie’s Pastries

This is such a huge deal for me because of my peanut/nut allergy. We found a bakery that is safe! Joanie's Pastries is a gluten free bakery, but they also make the non-nut things away from the nut things. My mum brought back some delicious goodies for me that went so well with my after work tea. If you’re in the area, please check it out just so a safe place can stay open for me!

October has been a very busy month, but I can’t wait for November. We get to go to our ski place rental for the first time, and I get to teach English again! So much to look forward to.

What have been your October highlights?

Recently Read - October 2020

Is fall not the best reading season? I’m so glad I’ve had a few opportunities to sit on the front porch, wrapped in a fuzzy blanket with a hot drink and my book. Right now, it’s raining outside and all I want to do is cozy up and get back to my book. I’ve read some great non-fiction in the past six weeks. I’m learning so much about how people relate to the world around them. That is so important to me. Check them out! The Reason I Jump: The Inner Voice of a Thirteen-Year-Old Boy with Autism – Naoki Higashida – 4 Stars         This is a very short book that I think everyone should read – particularly those who work with children. Although knowledge has come a long way, there is still so much more to be learned about autism. This book is a series of question that Naoki Higashida answers from his point of view. Interspersed is also a handful of short stories from Higashida’s point of view.         It’s an i...

Book Review- A Treatise On Shelling Beans by Wieslaw Mysliwski

So this book took me way too long to read. I read before bed to shut my brain off, but I was so exhausted all summer that I was asleep as soon as I got into bed. It has been a long time, but I finally finished it! I took a good handful of quotes that sparked my thinking, so brace yourself! And if you’re interested in the tradition summer, you can find it here . 1.        When people can be divided by something they always will be (9). Just think-the only thing that really divides us as people are differences. If we see someone who is a fraction of a fraction different than us, our minds consider it division. Why is that? Why must we let things get in the way of relationships?   2.        All the more because if you ask me, these days the soul is a commodity like anything else. You can buy it and sell it, and the prices aren’t high (28) A popular book genre of the modern era is “self-help.” Lumped with that...
