Monthly Favourites - August 2018

Well, that’s it folks. Summer is pretty much over. Goodbye ice cream and tan lines; hello cosy sweaters and warm drinks.

Also, hello starting a new job (hyperventilating). I don’t feel ready. I have yet to set up my classroom (that’s happening in a couple of days), and I’m really just starting to get into my own routine (these past couple weeks have been the most consistent I’ve ever been with working out). I’m still waiting for the nerves to set in. I’m mostly just really excited about starting this adventure.

Anyway, August didn’t actually feel like it flew by. It feels like I’ve lived a thousand lives in one month. I’ve been a patient, a daughter, a friend, a traveller, a big-leaper, and an independent woman. It has been crazy to look back and see the roller coaster of emotions I’ve felt this month.

These favourites are what got me through it.

1.       Herb Garden

I can say – with conviction – that I’m completely obsessed with my little herb garden. How cute is it? This was one of my goals for the new place. I love cooking with fresh ingredients and catching a whiff of basil is so satisfying. I also want to get some succulents for the other windowsill since it all makes me so happy.

2.       Camping Trip

I think one of the best things about getting older is when you have “adult moments” where you get so much joy out of doing something that only adults can do. My camping trip to MacGregor Point Provincial Park was one of those moments. It was so great to relax and spend time with some of the best people in my life. It’s a highlight of the summer for sure.

3.       Setting Up Home

Matt keeps laughing at me because I get so excited about little things like picking out dish towels and organizing drawers. I’ve done this so many times now, and I’ve loved it every time. I like knowing where everything is and having complete control over how things around me look. Things are now just really starting to feel like home.

4.       Any. Do

This app first appeared in a monthly favourites two years ago. I’ve used it on and off since then. I’ll use it when I’m super on-track to keep myself organized, but when my life goes wayside, I tend to delete it. Right now, I’m using it to plan my life and schedule my days. It has been so beneficial for me. I’ve recently discovered that I’m healthier when my schedule is packed, so by planning my days the night before, I really set myself up for success. It has really helped with the goals I want to accomplish.

5.       Duolingo

Don’t judge me for using so many apps this month. On a whim, I decided to learn Italian. My dad’s first language is Italian, and my Nonna speaks Italian, so I can actually practice when I’m good enough. The way they set the app out is like a game, so I’m very motivated to progress (I did it for hours when I first downloaded it). I think I’m doing alright for a first timer. The only thing I can’t figure out is how to use it effectively (I don’t think doing it for hours is beneficial). I’ve been doing a lesson in the morning followed by a practice and then practicing before bed. Any insights on this? Or links to a website that can tell me what to do? Nevertheless, I recently looked on an Italian author’s Instagram page and actually understood some of the things they were saying AND used a few sentences in context. Pat on the back for me!

There’s my August. It has been busy, that’s for sure. September has a lot more to get excited about. By this time next month, I’m sure I’ll have a lot to say about my teaching job. I can’t wait to see what September has in store.

What have been your favourites this month?

Is fall not the best reading season? I’m so glad I’ve had a few opportunities to sit on the front porch, wrapped in a fuzzy blanket with a hot drink and my book. Right now, it’s raining outside and all I want to do is cozy up and get back to my book. I’ve read some great non-fiction in the past six weeks. I’m learning so much about how people relate to the world around them. That is so important to me. Check them out! The Reason I Jump: The Inner Voice of a Thirteen-Year-Old Boy with Autism – Naoki Higashida – 4 Stars         This is a very short book that I think everyone should read – particularly those who work with children. Although knowledge has come a long way, there is still so much more to be learned about autism. This book is a series of question that Naoki Higashida answers from his point of view. Interspersed is also a handful of short stories from Higashida’s point of view.         It’s an i...

Copycat the Cool Way #2

I admit that I am a little late with this post. Things have been insane school-wise so I haven’t been keeping up to date with all my posts. Or anything for that matter. Plus, I got a new phone and I had to figure out how to get all the pictures from my old phone on to my laptop. Ugh. The following blurb is an imitation of my brain: duibqieufbijenwcijaaiojcfpo wijojndwqioNQIOENFONIONICQNINQ/ what? Descriptive right? Bear with me, I’m pre-writing a couple posts while I’m focused on blogging. I got you covered. Monday- Probably my favourite pants ever. They’re super comfy, but it can be tough to style them. I took the inspiration from a picture from a magazine (I think it might have been Glamour). It was also a spring day in Canada (did not last long), so I wanted to keep it cool temperature-wise. I have a blue cardigan that I typically wear instead of the scarf. Also, rainboots. Buy rainboots. They are the best for the icky, slushy, melty weather that is just around the corn...
