Be Relentless

One of my favourite podcasts is Happier with Gretchen Rubin. She keeps a running list called “Secrets of Adulthood” (full list here) that is full of facts and truths that she knows to be true. I’ve realised that I have one too – be relentless.

When I was going through school, I was relentlessly myself. It left me to be bullied. It left me isolated. It also taught me about who I am as a person. Because I was relentless, I came to self-realisation faster than my peers. I have been, and always will be, utterly, relentlessly myself.

I am relentless with my loyalty to my friends. I will show up for my friends any day and night. I let them know how much I love them. I will push them and support them when they thrive. I will listen and support them when they’re going through a difficult time. I have cultivated the best group of friends anyone could ask for because I have been relentless at being a good friend.

In my profession, you need to be relentless. You need to be relentless with the kids and show up for them because they will see how much you care as a result. You need to be relentless with the constant marking and planning and meetings because you’ll be buried in work otherwise. You also need to be relentlessly you in order to make connections with colleagues and pupils alike.

With my goals, I need to be more relentless. I need to be relentless about showing up for myself and doing things because I deserve them. Someone at work told me I seem like the most organised person, but my personal life is always falling apart a little (I may or may not be writing this post the night before an early morning start for a school trip). I’ve been relentless in every other aspect of my life, so I need to be relentless for myself.

To me, being relentless means never giving up. It means being steady and strong in your convictions. It means pushing through when things get a little bumpy. Being relentless is not easy; it’s a test of character. But it’s worth it. Being relentless means you can look back and feel proud of the things you have accomplished.

How have you been relentless today?

Is fall not the best reading season? I’m so glad I’ve had a few opportunities to sit on the front porch, wrapped in a fuzzy blanket with a hot drink and my book. Right now, it’s raining outside and all I want to do is cozy up and get back to my book. I’ve read some great non-fiction in the past six weeks. I’m learning so much about how people relate to the world around them. That is so important to me. Check them out! The Reason I Jump: The Inner Voice of a Thirteen-Year-Old Boy with Autism – Naoki Higashida – 4 Stars         This is a very short book that I think everyone should read – particularly those who work with children. Although knowledge has come a long way, there is still so much more to be learned about autism. This book is a series of question that Naoki Higashida answers from his point of view. Interspersed is also a handful of short stories from Higashida’s point of view.         It’s an i...

Book Review- A Treatise On Shelling Beans by Wieslaw Mysliwski

So this book took me way too long to read. I read before bed to shut my brain off, but I was so exhausted all summer that I was asleep as soon as I got into bed. It has been a long time, but I finally finished it! I took a good handful of quotes that sparked my thinking, so brace yourself! And if you’re interested in the tradition summer, you can find it here . 1.        When people can be divided by something they always will be (9). Just think-the only thing that really divides us as people are differences. If we see someone who is a fraction of a fraction different than us, our minds consider it division. Why is that? Why must we let things get in the way of relationships?   2.        All the more because if you ask me, these days the soul is a commodity like anything else. You can buy it and sell it, and the prices aren’t high (28) A popular book genre of the modern era is “self-help.” Lumped with that...
