Monthly Favourites - August 2020

I cannot believe this is the end of August. The end represents my final month employed as a teacher in the UK. It’s the end of a summer of a ton of reading. The end of all the free time I’ve been using to spend time with my family.

It’s also the beginning of a lot of exciting things. I’m starting to put down my roots in Canada. I get to be a part of my friends’ lives again. I get to go back to work!

Before I look forward, let me look back at my favourites in August.

1.      Bralettes

Like many people during lockdown, I have given up on bras while being at home. When I was in Leeds, I would live in workout clothes. When I came home, I started feeling the need to put actual outfits on. I quickly realized that I was not about to sit around wearing a bra with a wire in it all day. I got a couple bralettes from Aerie and one from La Vie en Rose, and I am so grateful that I did.

2.      Java Works Coffee

I love coffee. My dad and my sister love coffee. We believe in drinking good coffee. My dad and my sister originally discovered Java Works at Homesense around Christmas, but we found their online store and ordered a few bags. We love it so much! Brianne and I have been grinding the beans and making cold brew, and Papa puts it in his mini percolator in the mornings. The flavours are fun and delicious, and I highly suggest this company for any other coffee lovers out there.

3.      Triple Birthday

My mum kept joking that she owes me a bunch of birthday cakes since I’ve been away. So, I called her out on it. Despite my birthday being in March, we celebrated what we called my “triple birthday.” I got my favourite cake, and our family friends enjoyed a meal outside with us. I think it actually made up for the fact that we couldn’t be together for the past few years.

4.      Kate Spade Agenda

Like I said, I’m getting busy now! I work a casual position at a care home, a part time evening job at a tutoring place, and I’m waiting on the results of interviews for supply teaching during the day. Basically, I needed some organization in my life. I have mentioned Kate Spade planners in the past, and I have not stopped my love of them. Having monthly plans and weekly plans are crucial for me. Plus, it’s adorable.

5.      Indigenous Canada Course

In last month's favourites, I mentioned a bit about the issues Canada has with its treatment of Indigenous people both in the past and today. Well, I took a free course through Coursera called Indigenous Canada. It really opened my eyes to what was missed in history lessons. It also gave me a new perspective about how white-washed media is about how Canada began. There is so much we need to fix in Canada. This is an excellent starting point. Check it out.

That’s all for me in August! I truly have no idea what to expect for September. Things are still pretty iffy here about the nature of schools reopening. I’m not sure what to be expecting, but stay tuned I guess!

What have been the highlights of your month?

Recently Read - October 2020

Is fall not the best reading season? I’m so glad I’ve had a few opportunities to sit on the front porch, wrapped in a fuzzy blanket with a hot drink and my book. Right now, it’s raining outside and all I want to do is cozy up and get back to my book. I’ve read some great non-fiction in the past six weeks. I’m learning so much about how people relate to the world around them. That is so important to me. Check them out! The Reason I Jump: The Inner Voice of a Thirteen-Year-Old Boy with Autism – Naoki Higashida – 4 Stars         This is a very short book that I think everyone should read – particularly those who work with children. Although knowledge has come a long way, there is still so much more to be learned about autism. This book is a series of question that Naoki Higashida answers from his point of view. Interspersed is also a handful of short stories from Higashida’s point of view.         It’s an i...

Book Review- A Treatise On Shelling Beans by Wieslaw Mysliwski

So this book took me way too long to read. I read before bed to shut my brain off, but I was so exhausted all summer that I was asleep as soon as I got into bed. It has been a long time, but I finally finished it! I took a good handful of quotes that sparked my thinking, so brace yourself! And if you’re interested in the tradition summer, you can find it here . 1.        When people can be divided by something they always will be (9). Just think-the only thing that really divides us as people are differences. If we see someone who is a fraction of a fraction different than us, our minds consider it division. Why is that? Why must we let things get in the way of relationships?   2.        All the more because if you ask me, these days the soul is a commodity like anything else. You can buy it and sell it, and the prices aren’t high (28) A popular book genre of the modern era is “self-help.” Lumped with that...
